The Swiss petrol station network
With more than 3,400 brand-name petrol stations, Switzerland boasts the largest and most concentrated petrol station network in Europe. In 2016, an average of 1.35 million litres of fuel were sold at each petrol station in Switzerland.
Fuel diversification is one of the mega trends that will influence the petrol stations of the future. Petrol stations will be more colourful, and offer round-the-clock service to the mobile population. As a result, petrol stations will be “always in motion". In the future, petrol stations will continue to be focussed on the needs of customers, with services which might include pharmacies, spa areas or – as is already the case in some locations – a space for picking up parcels.
As the number of available fuels continues to rise, the core business of petrol stations is also bound to evolve. In addition to petrol and diesel, customers may have a choice of biofuels, synthetic fuels, electricity, natural gas/biogas or hydrogen.
